Kolo Toure has backed Steven Gerrard to lead Liverpool to Basel success…

Kolo Toure believes Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will lead the team to victory against Basel on Tuesday, claiming that the veteran midfielder is still capable of magic.

As Liverpool’s official website explains, Toure is well aware of what Gerrard is capable of on a big European night. The Ivorian was part of the Arsenal team beaten by the Reds in the 2008 Champions League quarter-final, when Gerrard’s late penalty ensured a 4-3 aggregate win.

The Basel game also comes just a day after the tenth anniversary of the 34-year-old’s famous strike against Olympiacos, which ensured the Reds’ progress beyond the competition’s group stage.

Toure has praised the skipper’s presence and outlined how his input can be crucial on another massive night for the club: “Steven is a man for great days,” he told reporters. “He makes the magic when no-one can make it. That is why he is one of the best players in the world.

“His age is nothing, people just keep talking but if you have a player like that in your dressing room it is very important with his experience. When he came on against Sunderland he made a difference. You could see the energy he brought to the team.

“Players like that don’t need 90 minutes to make the difference – only 20 or 30 minutes. I am really happy to have him as a captain first and as a man because he is a great player.”
