Phil Thompson names two Argentine superstars we need to sign

Should we target these two excellent forwards…

Club legend and regular Liverpool commenter Phil Thompson has given his opinion on what we need to do this January in the transfer market…

He told Sky Sports that we should steer clear of West Brom’s Englishman Saido Berahino, whose attitude has not impressed him, and we should instead focus on signing two players of genuine European pedigree…

“I would not like to think that Berahino is their prime target as a striker,” the former assistant manager began.

“Yes Liverpool do need one [a striker] with injuries to Daniel Sturridge and the difficulties that Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have had at the football club.

“I think that Liverpool need someone who is a bit more established and who has played at a higher level like Gonzalo Higuain and Ezequiel Lavezzi, somebody of that ilk to come in following the news about Steven Gerrard’s departure.

“So for me, I would not go for Berahino, although I can see the advantages of having him, but I tell you what, he has to change his attitude.”

Lavezzi is definitely available, having fallen out with the PSG coaching staff, and he recently received a fine from the French giants, too. He’s quick, versatile, but more of a wide-man than a forward – and his goal record isn’t too impressive, either.

Higuain, a fellow Argentine international, is very much a centre-forward however; but will be far more expensive than his counterpart. Higuain plays for Napoli in Serie A, and while a move to the Premier League might appeal to him, it’s uncertain whether he’d be available, or what we’d have to pay for his services.

If we did sign one of them, fans would be contented, although some other areas of the team need improving more.
