Markovic is set to start against the Blues this evening in the League Cup semi-final first-leg, but revenge is not his motivation…

“That’s his opinion,” said Markovic, when asked why Jose Mourinho turned down the first-option they had on the former Benfica wonderkid.

“I will play this game like every other match and I don’t have to prove or show anything to him.

“I don’t know who expected me to sign for Chelsea. I went to London, but I was meeting friends of mine there, Nemanja Matic and Branislav Ivanovic.

“There was never any pressure from them to sign for Chelsea but, of course, there is more motivation to face them now.

“But as soon as I discovered Liverpool were interested in me, I knew it was a really big club and I really wanted to come here. I am extremely happy.”

Whatever happened previously with Chelsea’s interest, we’re as delighted Markovic moved to us as he is.

While there were reservations about him early on due to a series of timid performances, he’s come into his own in recent months, and capped superb form recent form with a goal and a man-of-the-match performance against Sunderland earlier this January.

Markovic has thrived in his adjusted role as a wing-back, and he’s proved he can provide a barnstorming option down either flank in the 3-4-3 formation.

Not only can the Serb dribble, but he’s rapid, can pass – and almost most impressively, provides outstanding defensive work-rate to complement his forward forays.

May his good form continue, and may Chelsea forever regret turning down the chance to snap him up!
