New development in £22m move for Sterling replacement

We have recently been linked with a move for Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev, but it seems now that the interest was purely fabricated, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Russian star has been tipped to make a £22m move to Anfield (via the Echo), with a replacement winger likely to be needed following the imminent departure of Raheem Sterling (via the BBC).

The Echo’s report claims there has been no contract between us and Madrid however, and that we have no interest in bringing him to Anfield ahead of the new campaign.

Cheryshev spent a successful last season on loan at Villarreal, and the report claims the La Liga side are keen to bring him back again in 2015/16. So even if we were keen on the 24-year-old, we would be facing heavy competition for his signature.

The links make sense, as if and when Sterling does complete his move to the Etihad, we may well need reinforcements in the wide areas. Cheryshev seems unlikely to be the player set to arrive though, and that might be for the best. We have also been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus (via the Metro), which would arguably be the signing of the summer.
