Eight great Liverpool ‘international’ goals – with Torres Euro winner & Whelan’s jaw-dropper

The international break has essentially turned into a fortnight where Liverpool fans close their eyes and hope the players come back healthy, especially when it’s just tiresome friendlies.

But there has been times when Liverpool players have made us get out of our seats during matches for their country – which when it’s England – is doubly satisfying!

Here’s seven of the best international goals scored by players when they were at Liverpool.

Add any we’ve missed at the bottom!

Fernando Torres for Spain to win the Euro 2008 final…

At this point, Torres was probably the best centre-forward on the planet.

Steven Gerrard in the 5-1 thumping of Germany…

A youngster at the time, Gerrard gave us a 2-1 lead here. The rest is history. (The other goals this night were scored by Michael Owen and Emile Heskey – both Liverpool players at the time!)

Michael Owen’s wonder-goal versus Argentina…

Before he let himself down later in his career, this was a ridiculously satisfying moment for any England or Liverpool fan.

John Barnes in a friendly against Brazil…

Barnes arguably underachieved for England, but nobody will ever forget this moment which confirmed his genius against the planet’s best.

Luis Suarez knocks out England…

After years of (sometimes deserved) abuse from the English press, Suarez shut them up here by knocking the Three Lions out of the World Cup. Still, he bit Giorgio Chielini one week later and felt the wrath of the tabloids like never before.

Ronnie Whelan against USSR in Euro 1988…

Arguably the technically most impressive goal on this list – even if it did come off his shin!

Steven Gerrard’s world-class brace against Hungary in 2010…

Gerrard underperforming for England was a myth. He was more often than not one of the best players on the pitch, just stitched by stubborn managers deploying him and Frank Lampard incorrectly together. When used as a no.10, here’s what he was capable of:

Coutinho bamboozles Mexico in friendly win…

Classic Coutinho this one. Leaves a man absolutely for dead and uses his instep to finish with aplomb. Lovely.
