Houllier: “I know Klopp has always been a Liverpool fan”

Our former boss Gerard Houllier has told the Express that he knows Jurgen Klopp has always been a Liverpool fan.

“I know Jurgen from UEFA meetings and he has always liked Liverpool”, he said. He had a passion for the club. He was always talking about Liverpool; what we did, how we lived. I can tell you he was a true fan of Liverpool and he was following the results before going there”.

Houllier, who won a historic cup treble back in 2001 and still refers to the club as “us”, went on to say he was encouraged about the way our season was shaping up, despite a poor week which saw us draw with West Brom and Sion, and lose to struggling Newcastle.

“They are in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup, which could give a lot of confidence for the rest of the season… sometimes with a competition like that you get a sense of relief first because you win something and then it gives you confidence.”

“They are still in the Europa League too, and they have a role to play in that. That can bring them confidence”.

It’s great to have a genuine fan of the club in charge. Houllier and Rafa were both big fans before they arrived, and they both brought plenty of success. The despised Roy Hodgson and misunderstood Rodgers were not, and they failed to emulate their predecessors.

Hopefully Klopp’s clear passion will translate to silverware, and based off his time with us so far, there is nothing to suggest it won’t.
