Klopp asks for “trust” after quiet deadline day at Melwood

It’s become something of a running joke on deadline day in recent years. Jim White is bouncing off the walls of the SkySports studio like an excited puppy, Harry Redknapp is wheeling and dealing from his car window, and Melwood is all locked up with the lights off by 6pm.

To be fair, you can’t really blame us. Our last big deadline day splurge was the £35 million man Andy Carroll, and look how that turned out!

Nonetheless, with all the talk of Alex Teixeira and Joel Matip, there was a hope this January might be different.

Alas, no.

In light of another quiet transfer window, in which loan signing Caulker was the only immediately incoming player (Grujic will arrive in the summer), our boss Jurgen Klopp has asked the fans for trust (via Echo).

“We made offers,” said Klopp. “I won’t say too much about that, but they were realistic, absolutely, with the pluses of it being January, the Premier League, all the pluses you have when you make negotiations with other clubs.”

“But it was a case of ‘if you don’t want it okay, we can’t change the situation, do what you want’. It’s important for now and for the future. It’s not that we haven’t got money or anything, but you have to work respectfully and responsibly.”

“Yes, you can trust us,” he went on.

“It was absolutely a common decision [on Teixeira]. We said we can’t play this game until the end.”
