Injury hit defender expected to play a part in pre-season friendlies

Joe Gomez is expected to return to the Liverpool first team at some point during our various pre-season friendlies.

According to the Echo, no official date has been set, but our medical team are optimistic that he’s almost ready to return.

The 19-year-old has been out for more than eight months after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while on international duty with the England youth setup.

Prior to his injury, he had played an important part in the start of our 2015/16 campaign – keeping the more experienced Alberto Moreno out of the first eleven.

He and Danny Ings have been working together in their bid to regain fitness – and while Ings was able to make a cameo sub appearance in our final game of the season against West Brom – the game came too soon for Gomez.

We are scheduled to play eight pre-season games, with the first coming against local rivals Tranmere Rovers on July 8th.

We then face Fleetwood Town, Wigan Athletic, and Huddersfield Town before jetting off to the USA for the International Champions Cup.

Gomez has reportedly been included in the tour squad.

How important can Gomez be for us in the coming season? Let us know in the comments.
