Garth Crooks’ claim about Alberto Moreno is utterly ridiculous

Alberto Moreno consistently let us down last season and he’s started this campaign in the same fashion, but some of the media reaction is now getting ridiculous.

In fact, we’d go as far to call it bullying.

Yes, he gave away a penalty – but the goal in which he’s being blamed for (Theo Walcott’s opener) only occurred because Adam Lallana needlessly gave the ball away in the middle of the field. Moreno had bombed forward – but be completely aware – that’s because Jurgen Klopp has instructed him to when we’re in possession.

But Garth Crooks, along with much of the rest of the media, has completely exaggerated the disaster the Spaniard had, for us – disrespectfully claiming Liverpool will get relegated unless we replace him.

“Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is not averse to spending money if the talent is available,” he dubiously began in his Team of the Week column for BBC Sport.

“Having spent it wisely on Mane, he should seriously think about selling striker Christian Benteke – as he is surplus to requirements – and buying a decent left-back. If he keeps Alberto Moreno in the team, he can forget the top four – he’ll get relegated.”

Even if you or I started at left-back for a season, the rest of the team would stop Liverpool being relegated, so for an ex-pro to make a claim so strong about a current one, is for us, not on.

Yes, Moreno is a POOR defender. Liverpool badly need to buy a new one. But he’s young, good going forward and could do a job for a different club. Some of the reaction, aimed at a 23-year-old who despite mistakes, is doing his utmost to help our cause, is totally out of order.

Hopefully, for his sake as well as ours, he’ll be sold to a side where he’s not made the scapegoat every weekend – and we’ll bring in an upgrade.
