Top Bundesliga box-to-box midfielder (21) says Liverpool tried to buy him this summer

Liverpool were one of a number of top Premier League clubs who made enquiries to sign talented midfield dynamo Naby Keita in the summer.

The 21-year-old plays for Red Bull Leipzig in the Bundesliga, having moved to the club from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer.

“Liverpool…Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were all interested in signing me [but] I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga first,” said the man named Guinean footballer of the year in 2015.

Keita has bundles of energy and in many ways is similar to N’golo Kante – although he’s more of an attacking threat – having bagged 17 goals during his time in Austria and three already this term in Germany.

It’s interesting that he’s on Jurgen Klopp’s radar, as our manager watched Sadio Mane heavily during his time at Salzburg, so obviously was impressed by Keita as well.

As it was though, we signed Gini Wijnaldum in this role, while choosing to bring Ovie Ejaria through, having already purchased Marko Grujic back in January.

For this reason, we’d be surprised if we went back in Keita anytime soon, especially with Mahmoud Dahoud the well know midfield target for future transfer windows.
