Klopp: Why we can’t & don’t compete with Chelsea & United for players

Posted by

Jurgen Klopp has claimed Liverpool do have money to spend on players, but suggests other factors means it makes no sense for Liverpool to go in for them once Chelsea or Manchester United have shown an interest…

Last summer, United snared Mkhitaryan, Bailly, Ibrahimovic and Pogba, while Chelsea acquired Kante, Batshuayi and David Luiz, among others.

Chelsea are walking the Premier League, while United secured the EFL Cup and are in with a chance of winning two more cups, while fighting us for a top four spot.

Klopp reckons that some players want to live in London or Manchester above Liverpool, but assures fans that FSG have never once told him we can’t match them financially…

“If you only think you have to spend the same amount of money as other clubs, then yeah, maybe it’s more likely to fight for the same players,” Klopp told the Echo.

“Is it possible to fight with those clubs for those players? In a few moments it is possible. It will not be about money I am sure.

“We can go for the players we want to go for. Can we go for a player Manchester United want to go for? If United make an offer, if Chelsea make an offer, does it make sense to jump in? I don’t know.

“So is it then about money or is it that players think: ‘Manchester is a nicer city or I want to live in London instead of Liverpool?’ We have to make a decision apart from what the other clubs want.

“We have to make a decision, and if then the club comes to me and says: ‘That is too expensive’, I have to accept it. But that didn’t happen until now and I don’t expect it to happen.”

If money really is no object, you have to really question our decisions in the transfer market to date…

Are Liverpool, a world famous club of immense prestige, managed by Klopp, with two brilliant Brazilians in the front-three, really that unattractive a proposition?

If we manically went for Kante at the start of last summer, could we not have acquired him? Chelsea finished tenth last year, remember…

The fact Klopp’s got lots of money to spend is great, but unless we’re targeting top level players, we’re not going to get to the next level.
