Liverpool linked with £35m Serie A centre-back to solve defensive problems

Liverpool have shortlisted Roma’s powerhouse 25-year-old Kostas Manolas as a potential summer signing, reports the Mirror.

The Greek international is rated at £35m following another excellent season in Serie a for the title contenders.

He arrived in Rome in 2014 from Olympiakos and has established a reputation as one of the best defenders in Italy.

Arsenal have been keen in the past, thanks to his ability to pass out from the back. Manolas also has a nasty side though and is emerging as a real leader for Roma, too.

Liverpool currently have Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Lucas competing for two spots at the heart of our backline – but the only one there certain to have a long-term future is Matip.

The other three have been far too inconsistent, as demonstrated by the fact we’ve conceded the most goals out of all the clubs in the top eight, including West Brom.

A centre-back is likely going to be a priority this summer, but whether we’ll pay a club record fee (anything above £35m) for one is another matter…
