Klopp: Why I can’t watch Milner’s penalties

James Milner is about as reliable a penalty taker as we’ve seen in a Liverpool shirt – Steven Gerrard included.

This term, he’s notched seven from seven attempts, stepping up and dispatching confidently on every occasion.

It would be nice for a striker to pad his stats with these penalty goals, but when Milner is so clinical, nobody will take it off him!

In fact, the only penalty he didn’t take this season was missed by Divock Origi in the FA Cup.

Jurgen Klopp doesn’t watch Milner’s spot-kicks and hasn’t done all campaign. While it’s working, Liverpool’s boss says he’ll carry on doing the same!

“I don’t want to touch wood, but I hope it stays like this,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com.

“The only reason I don’t watch them is because from the start of the season he is doing a job well without my support. So that’s why – I don’t want to be responsible if he fails one or misses one! That’s the only reason.”

Steven Gerrard holds the record for penalties in a Premier League season with ten converted. That was in 2013/14, so Milner could break that provided we get a few more awarded in our final nine games!

If there’s any pivotal ones, we fully back Milner to continue slotting them away – providing Klopp turns his head!
