Steven Gerrard stayed in Liverpool’s first-team from 1998 to 2015 – and during his peak – he could have quite literally played for any team in the world.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich – you name it – would all have benefited enormously from his services in the mid-noughties.
In 2005 following the Champions League win, Gerrard was mighty close to leaving and joining Chelsea, but the club eventually managed to persuade him to sign, although they messed about with contract offers throughout that summer that almost ruined everything.
Jose Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea then, but according to our new Under-18s coach, the Portuguese continued his pursuit long after he departed Stamford Bridge.
Gerrard told the Mirror: “He tried to sign me probably about five or six times during my career.
“Twice at Chelsea, he tried to sign me at Inter Milan and for Real Madrid as well.
“I could have gone and played for him at different teams but I never did.”
Kenny Dalglish is perhaps the only player who can rival Gerrard as our greatest, having won multiple league titles and European Cups during his time at the club.
