It’s pretty clear that Daniel Sturridge has been impressing Jurgen Klopp this summer.
About four months ago, it looked certain that the Englishman would leave, after he fell down our manager’s pecking order and was consistently picking up injuries.
But at the back end of the season, Sturridge got back into the side and helped us confirm our place in the top four with excellent performances against West Ham and Middlesbrough.
He’s remained fit and has been one of the better performers during the summer friendlies so far.
According to his manager, the England forward is in the best physical shape he’s ever seen him.
Klopp told the ECHO: “What I can say is that he’s here, he’s training and this is 100% the best face since we got together.
“Did you see him train? He is really digging in and giving everything.
“He’s reaching for the next level, a new physical level and that’s really good news.
“We don’t have to talk about what a difference he could make, everybody knows about it. We just need to have it. We need him fit.”
The boss wouldn’t be drawn on whether Sturridge would be a starter though, instead suggesting that he’ll make tactical altercations depending on the opposition.
We expect Roberto Firmino, our new no.9, to be first choice – but would like to see them deployed together on occasion.
“There will be different opportunities in different games,” Klopp continued.
“We need a lot of options – different players with different styles of play.
“We always need to be quick but when we can’t be quick we need to be patient. All that stuff.
“I am really looking forward to it but I am happy that we still have a few weeks to train together and improve together.”
Our strength in depth at the top end of the field is clear, but at the back, we need enforcements. Providing we secure a centre-back before August ends we’ll be set for the season. Naby Keita, of course, will be an added bonus.
