‘I didn’t like it…’ Liverpool star criticises Klopp’s decision but is happier now

James Milner is delighted at being back in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield instead of at left-back, where he was used the entirety of last season.

The right-footed Premier League veteran was oddly used in this role in 2016/17, despite never having played there before at his various other clubs.

In fairness, he did pretty well, but since pre-season, the manager has brought Alberto Moreno back into the fold and signed Andrew Robertson as the Spaniard’s backup.

Milner was just a sub early on in the campaign but has played himself back into the side, starting our past three games in his preferred midfield role, just to the right of Jordan Henderson – who anchors the team.

“Yes, absolutely,” Milner replied, when asked about if he’s happy to be back in midfield. “I did a job as well as I could. I didn’t like playing there. But you do what’s asked of you. But I am enjoying my football again in midfield,” he told the presser, which was streamed live on YouTube.

“Last season I was asked to do a job. Said at time I didn’t enjoy playing left-back, but the team comes first…
“I’m enjoying playing in midfield and helping the team. We want two more wins before the international break.”
Moreno is enjoying easily his best season in Liverpool red at left-back, while Robertson is a strong understudy – so we don’t think we’ll need Milner there again.
The ex-England international actually has very good delivery into the box, so when we’re playing sides we think will sit deep – he’s maybe a better option in midfield than deploying both of Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum.
He’ll still struggle to get into the side when everyone’s fit, mind.
