The Echo have confirmed Jurgen Klopp’s strong interest in his countryman Leon Goretzka, but in truth, we already knew Liverpool are keen on Schalke’s midfield general.
‘The 22-year-old is on Jurgen Klopp’s radar – and could ironically replace fellow Germany international midfielder Emre Can at Anfield,’ they write.
Many clubs around Europe though are monitoring Goretzka’s situation, as his contract expires at the end of this season and is freely available for non-German teams to approach come January 1st.
That’s in roughly one month – so you can be sure potential suitors are already in discussions with his representatives – unofficially.

Schalke are about to offer Goretzka a massive contract, which they hope he’ll pen and become the club’s highest ever paid player.
Even so, other sides in Europe, especially those in the Premier League, will be able to better any lavish wages put on the table by a Bundesliga outfit.
Goretzka is more offensive than Can, who is also departing on a Bosman, but we predict Klopp will mould him into a more defensive player if he arrived – like he did with Gini Wijnaldum.
We think this one has a very high chance of happening. When it comes to persuading players to join, Klopp’s a master.
