Telegraph breaks bad Boxing Day news for Liverpool fans RE Van Dijk

At EOTK, we know that Liverpool are indeed in the running for Virgil van Dijk. Southampton are happy to talk to us again about a possible sale and the club is ready to lodge an enormous January bid.

But we’re going to be competing with Manchester City for his signature… The Telegraph published a piece last night which suggested Pep Guardiola’s side and not us are the frontrunners.

James Ducker writes that City are ‘closing in’ on a £60m deal for the Dutchman, who’s been made available by Southampton, who left him out of their past two Premier League starting XIs.

However, Ducker also suggests that van Dijk would only arrive as a third-choice centre-back at the Etihad behind John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, while adding that Jonny Evans and Inigo Martinez are backup targets if they don’t land Southampton’s defender.

Kevin Palmer in the Irish Independent initially thought Liverpool are favourites, but following the piece in the Telegraph, told fans on Twitter that it’s essentially a bidding war.

Bidding war with City? Brilliant. Wouldn’t be especially confident that one would end how we wanted it to..
