Klopp praises ‘highest level’ defender who excelled with Virgil van Dijk

Jurgen Klopp has praised Joel Matip – who put in a perfect performance in the absence of both Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren down at Bournemouth.

Via Neil Jones, Klopp said: “I could write a book about Virgil’s strengths and about Alisson’s strengths, but look what Joel Matip did today.

“How good he was, and he has absolutely no rhythm. He trains on the highest level and he’s not even in the squad sometimes.”

With Gomez out for around six weeks, and Lovren’s injury record patchy to say the least, Matip needs to have a big few weeks over the festive period – and this was a more than solid start.

Lovren is more likely to start against Napoli on Tuesday if the Croatian is fit, but after today’s showing, there should be no concerns over the Cameroonian should his name appear on the teamsheet.
