There’s no cup-tied rule anymore, so Matts Hummels could theoretically take the field against his parent side next month, should what Jan Aage Fjortoft proposed on Twitter go through…

The journalist, and former Premier League striker, was speculating that Jurgen Klopp would bring in a new central defender following the injury to Dejan Lovren – and linked us to Bayern’s Hummels – who currently cannot get into the team due to Jerome Boateng and Niklas Sule ahead of him in the pecking order…

Naturally, plenty of Liverpool fans jumped on the tweet and began imagining Hummels, who’s been regarded as world-class for many a season, alongside Virgil van Dijk – the best centre-back on the planet.

Hummels used to play for Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and the pair are known to still have a strong relationship.

Liverpool though will not enter the transfer market and will deploy Fabinho as a central defender until one of Joe Gomez, Joel Matip or Lovren are fit again – with all three expected to be ready before the end of the month.

What’s more, Hummels is in decline, and we actually wouldn’t want him at Anfield, despite the romance of the deal.
