Virgil van Dijk has flourished into being the best centre-back in the world since signing for the Reds for £75 million.
He has proven to be an absolute bargain over the last 18 months and has devoured attacker after attacker in that time. So good has been, he’s a genuine contender to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, which hardly ever gets won by a defensive player.
This season alone, he’s dominated the likes of Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Paris-Saint Germain’s Neymar, while he never looked shaky at all against Lionel Messi or in the Champions League final against Tottenham.

As long as Van Dijk continues to perform at this level in the early part of next season – and there is no reason to think he won’t – then the Ballon d’Or is a realistic ambition for him.
