Joe Gomez speaks potential transfers & makes smart point

Joe Gomez is pleased the club has not been active in the transfer window this summer.

The central defender appreciates the natural supporter need for new faces, but claims that the current roster is genuinely world-class – and he’s not wrong.

Liverpool have the Champions League trophy and 97 points in the top flight to back that statement up.

“Probably a lot of fans want to see money spent and big names coming in, but when you look at our team, everyone is committed,” Gomez told the excellent Neil Jones in Goal.

“Look at the amount of contracts that have been signed in the last 12 months, look at the age of the team. We’re here to stay.

“And if you look in all the different departments, the quality is there. Training here has been of an unbelievable standard, and we still have Mo, Sadio, Bobby, Ali to come back!

“Competition is good, but I think the squad has a good balance too. The manager knows best, and if he’s confident in us then why shouldn’t we believe in ourselves?”

It’ll be mighty interesting to see whether Gomez starts the new season in the team.

At the end of 2018/19, he regained fitness, but Jurgen Klopp felt no reason to drop Joel Matip, who was superb from Christmas until the summer following Gomez’s broken leg.

We think it’s a shootout between Gomez and Matip for the spot alongside Virgil van Dijk, who is obviously an automatic starter.

Dejan Lovren will likely be fourth-choice, with Sepp van den Berg a possible option in early FA Cup Rounds, but only if players are injured.

Gomez is happy with no further arrivals, but as he suggests, we would quite like a new left-back and a versatile forward!

Let’s see what happens before the campaign begins.
