Joe Gomez using surprise Reds man as his inspiration this pre-season

Joe Gomez says Rhian Brewster can be his inspiration as the defender looks to win back his place alongside Virgil van Dijk ahead of the new season.

Gomez was undoubtedly number one choice before he got injured against Burnley last year. His replacement, Joel Matip, though, was world class in his absence.

At this stage, choosing between the pair ahead of the opening day clash with Norwich City is probably Jurgen Klopp’s biggest headache.

Via This Is Anfield, Gomez said: “At the end of the day I’m in the same position as everyone else; we’re here, we’re fit and we’re playing, so that’s all we can focus on.

“Rhian’s just like a breath of fresh air. He enjoys football. He’s got that perfect balance of confidence, but not arrogance, and just enjoyment. Sometimes you lose track of that in the game, and it’s important to just enjoy what we do and Rhi is the prime example of that.”

Gomez certainly has the right attitude – and we’re sure Matip is the same. Whoever starts the season as number one will know that the battle is not over; both players are likely to feature a lot with so many matches to come.

Brewster himself will also be getting a lot of time on the pitch. He’s been so impressive this pre-season and the signs are definitely there that he can be Daniel Sturridge’s replacement.

It’s exciting times with the new campaign only a couple of weeks away from beginning.
