Reds ‘make contact’ with £53.8 million midfielder who impressed in Sporting Lisbon friendly

Liverpool are interested in signing Idrissa Doumbia from Sporting Lisbon after he impressed in the pre-season friendly on Thursday, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

The 21-year-old has a £53.8 million release clause and the report in Portugal claims the Reds contacted Sporting in the hours after the friendly in order to enquire about the midfielder.

Sporting only signed him from Russian side Akhmat Grozny in January but if his release clause was to be activated, they would be powerless to do anything about it.

The Ivorian, who stands at 1.87m tall, is predominantly a defensively-minded player, but he did score once in 12 matches last season in Primeira Liga.

While the Reds are in talks over Doumbia – if that is indeed true – then why not speak about Bruno Fernandes as well? Fernandes was also excellent in the game, and would no doubt improve the quality of the squad.

Given the choice between the pair, we’d prefer the club to go for Fernandes, though they are two very different players.

Whoever the Reds go for, however, given the record of Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards, we’ll fully back them. Any decision certainly won’t be based on one game, either, as the report appears to intimate.
