Jurgen Klopp has set the wheels in motion for Joel Matip to be offered a new contract with the Reds, according to Football Insider, with the German fearful that the defender could sign with a new club in January given he has less than a year left on his current deal.
Matip arrived on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016, but unless he signs a new contract, will be leaving for nothing next June when his contract is set to expire, according to the report.
It is worth noting, however, that the Liverpool ECHO say Matip is, in fact, contracted with the club until June 2021, not 2020.

The Cameroonian has been brilliant over the last few months, putting himself ahead of Joe Gomez in the pecking order. There’s an argument he has been better than Virgil van Dijk in some games, which is high praise indeed.
No one saw his incredible run of form coming a year or so ago, but now he has put together a few months where he has been completely injury-free, Matip has genuinely been world-class for the Reds.
Getting him tied down to a contract extension has got to be very high up on the list of priorities for the club in the next couple of months.
