Andy Robertson is the first ever Scot to be shortlisted for the FIFPRO World XI – a just reward for his jaw-dropping performances last season.
The left-back is surely a shoe-in, with the likes of Marcelo and Jordi Alba, although more world renowned, nowhere near Robbo’s level in 2018/19.
55 players have been nominated, meaning that five teams will be named overall – from best to worst!
“I made the joke saying I’m one of 55 — probably the biggest squad I have ever been involved in,” Robertson told The Mail.
“It’s obviously a massive thing for me but let’s see if I get in the XI or not. Even to be nominated alongside the players there is a special feeling. Also to have six of your (Liverpool) team-mates there is really good.
“Let’s see how many of us get in the team — and a lot of the other Liverpool boys could probably have been there, too. That shows you how good a season we had last year.”
The 25-year-old has started this season where he left the last.
Robbo is positionally exceptional, incredibly fit and provides a constant overlapping option down our left flank.
He and Trent Alexander-Arnold are essential to our style of play – and enable the midfield to play quite narrowly and Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to tuck in and get in the box.
Robbo and Trent are having another friendly assist competition this season, but the left-back hasn’t got off the mark yet!
His partner in crime is on two – so Robbo will be keen to right that after the international break.
