Jurgen Klopp doesn’t think he’ll need to use the fact his players have already won the Champions League as any kind of motivation going into the start of this season’s competition – with our opening Group Stage match taking place in Italy this evening v Napoli.
The boss was asked how he could use last season’s victory as a tool for further success, but gave quite a strange answer – stating that his players should be able to keep their heads in the game despite the glory of 2018/19.
“If you go nuts and start taking drugs and drinking and driving different cars or whatever, and leave your missus at home because you are now the Champions League winner then I can’t help you,” Klopp said, cited in Football365.
“But we are not like this, we want to create more stories to remember in the future and not only this one, so we cannot stick to that.
“I have no idea how I could use the fact that I won the Champions League with the boys, so I didn’t even think about it.”
So far this season, Liverpool have won five out of five Premier League games – scoring more than once on every occasion – and the European Super Cup to boot.
It seems a far cry from when people were slating our lack of summer transfer activity and suggesting we were allowing Manchester City a free run at this season’s title…
Klopp though completely trusts his current squad. Each player has the right technical, tactical and physical attributes – but just as importantly – the right character.
We don’t know if Liverpool will win any of the big prizes this season, but we’ve put ourselves in a fantastic position to challenge, and that’s all we can ask.
Let’s just enjoy the ride, because it’s very rarely been as good as this.
