Chris Sutton savages ‘cheating’ Napoli in serious ref rant

Chris Sutton thinks the penalty given to Napoli on Tuesday evening was farcical.

Jose Callejon appeared to have been fouled by Andy Robertson in the penalty area, and at first glance, we can understand why the ref gave a spot-kick, so our anger is not directed at him unlike Chris Sutton’s.

But for VAR to review the incident from various angles and decide not to overturn it is nothing short of fraudulent.

Napoli went on to win the game 2-0, but at the point when it happened, we were cruising and looked far more likely to score next.

“Liverpool were unfortunate because Napoli were given a helping hand by referee Felix Brych, who awarded them that late penalty,” the former Celtic forward wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“I’m sorry, but that was not a foul by Andrew Robertson. It was simulation by Jose Callejon.

“He dived to win the spot-kick, then VAR failed to overturn it.

“It’s cheating. He’s already going to ground and initiated the contact.

“VAR should be getting these decisions right. Liverpool were hard done by.”

The 2-0 defeat puts us in a tricky situation, but we’re not worried.

Providing we beat Salzburg at Anfield, then Genk twice, we’ll be well on our way to qualification…

The Austrians are a decent outfit, but we’d hope that on Merseyside we’ll have the pace and power to put them to the sword.

Last season we lost three matches in the Group Stages and once in the Knockout Stages and still went on to win the competition – so this is but a minor setback for Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Reds!
