Virgil van Dijk came 2nd in Monday night’s Ballon d’Or vote behind Lionel Messi, which disappointed many Liverpool fans who believed his performances in 2018/19 deserved the top spot.
After all, he was pivotal in our Champions League win and helped Liverpool to 97 points domestically, too.
It was the best season we’ve ever seen from a defender by some distance, in fact.
But when you consider every defender in the history of the game who’s actually made the top three, you’ll realise how impressive the Dutchman’s finish actually was.
In the tweet below, you’ll see the names:
The only defenders to ever finish in the Balon d’Or top 3:
• Giacinto Facchetti
• Franz Beckenbauer
• Bobby Moore
• Franco Baresi
• Andreas Brehme
• Paulo Maldini
• Matthias Sammer
• Roberto Carlos
• Fabio Cannavaro
• Virgil Van Dijk

That’s the company van Dijk is now keeping.
Our phenomenal no.4 already has a European Cup to his name, of course, but will now try all he can to add the Premier League.
We have a sizeable lead at the top of the table, but any slip-ups can be capitalised on by the chasing pack – with Leicester City and Manchester City both very good, capable teams.
