Rickie Lambert update: West Brom interested but will pursue other targets first

Rickie Lambert is facing an anxious wait to discover whether anyone actually wants him this summer, with reports in the Birmingham Mail suggesting that West Brom don’t consider the Liverpool man to be among their prime targets.

The source states that Albion are keen to sign at least one new striker this summer – with Georgios Samaras having been released and Saido Berahino linked with Tottenham (via Daily Mirror) – but insists that Lambert is just one of a number of possible targets.

They do at least admit that Christian Benteke’s imminent arrival at Anfield (via BBC Sport), means that Lambert is likely to be moving on this summer, and hint that they could be one of the favourites for his signature.

The 33-year-old, who scored just three goals last season following his move from Southampton, sat out our training session today after suffering an injury. According to the Echo, he was sent for a scan on the knock, but it’s not believed to be a serious issue.

Also in the Echo, are reports linking the player with Championship side Middlesbrough, who have risen to odds-on favourites in the betting world. Borough have already brought in former Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing this summer to help aid their promotion bid, so perhaps one to keep an eye on there if West Brom don’t act first.
