It is probably a little-known fact among Liverpool fans that Jurgen Klopp is best buddies with current Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner.
Wagner was Klopp’s best man when he got married, they played together for four years at Mainz, and Wagner managed Dortmund’s second string before they both crossed the Channel.
“Sometimes I spent more nights with him than with my wife”, Wagner joked. “He doesn’t snore but he smoked – although I only allowed him to smoke in the toilet, unless there was a balcony”.
The comments, which were reported in the Echo, were also backed up by some more serious analysis of Klopp.
When asked about Sam Allardyce’s recent comments about the German’s training and tactics, he said that the both were vital to Klopp’s success – adding “if someone can find me a medicine to replace hard work, please let me know!”
“Jurgen doesn’t play by rules, he acts naturally. His players will certainly recognise this”, he went on.
“They will always get the information they have to hear not just what they want to hear. This honesty is one of his biggest qualities”.
“He likes routine, it’s important in this very fast business, but at the right moment you must come up something special nobody expected and he has a great instinct for this”.
Wagner also said he was already trying to deploy gegenpressing at Huddersfield – and the results have been almost immediate. He’s won four out of seven since taking charge, helping to propel the side away from the Championship drop zone.
For their part, the Huddersfield fans have been serenading him with a rendition of “He’s better than Klopp”. If Huddersfield keep up the good form, we might actually find out who really is the best next season!
