Liverpool’s ‘mystery January target’ has finally been announced

Remember in January when Twitter was exploding with rumours of the ‘mystery target’ who could come in and replace Coutinho?

Jonathan Northcroft of the Sunday Times discussed the unnamed player on a podcast with Anfield Index, which you can listen to below…

It was never revealed who Liverpool were considering buying in the winter, until now though.

Rather uninspiringly, it was West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini, as Northcroft confirmed today on Twitter!

The Argentine has been on Liverpool’s shortlist for some time, but Paul Joyce in the Times claims that the ligament injury he’s picked up means we’re no longer considering him a viable option.

Liverpool fans will probably be quite happy about that, considering that since arriving in 2015, the 25-year-old has just 20 goals in 100 games and has hardly inspired a tepid West Ham side to greatness.

For now, we wait to see who’ll arrive as Coutinho’s long-term replacement. Lanzini is a no-g0, Nabil Fekir has fallen through and we regard Isco and Marcos Asensio as unattainable.

Hopefully, Klopp can pull another rabbit out of his transfer hat!
