(Video) “I hope it’s not Arsenal” – Ex-Liverpool forward dreaded thought of London move

We all know that Liverpool is the pinnacle of career moves and one former Red has explained how, when he heard that an offer had been accepted for his services, his only hope was not moving to Arsenal.

Speaking on the ‘We Are Liverpool Podcast’, John Aldridge discussed how a transfer from Oxford United to Anfield came about: “Well, I got to know the morning that we played Man City, Maine Road.

“A strange one, like half ten in the morning, rooming with Bobby McDonald. He said, ‘The gaffer wants to see you.’ Strange. He said, ‘The club’s accepted an offer for you.’

“And I’m thinking, can’t tell me this, this is four hours before we play. I’m thinking, ‘I hope it’s not Arsenal, because I’ve been linked to Arsenal in the papers.’

“And he said, ‘I think you’ll like it.’ And there’d been a couple of mutterings because Rushy’s going. I was very likened to Rushy in those days. And then I thought, ‘It’s Liverpool.’ And he said yeah. I thought I was still in bed dreaming. I started pinching myself a little bit”.

It’s great to hear of the child-like excitement from the 65-year-old when the move to his team was suddenly on the cards.

Although a move to London with the Gunners is certainly a step up from Oxford, nothing compares to playing for the team you support and the former forward was lucky enough to live out his dreams.
