Today, Daniel Sturridge announced on social media that he’s close to returning to first-team action, having not played a game for us since August…
In his absence, Brendan Rodgers has experimented with a number of different formations, but it’s the 3-4-3, which involved a fluid front-three and attacking wing-backs, that has given us the most success.
When Sturridge returns then, it’s possible that Rodgers will stick with the 3-4-3, and integrate our star signing into the spearhead role, enabling Raheem Sterling a more withdrawn, more natural attacking midfield position.
With Coutinho our best player right now, this means that Sterling and the Brazilian magician could play behind the returning Sturridge, in the hope of relentlessly feeding one of the country’s best finishers.
With summer signings Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic seemingly comfortable in the wing-back roles, Rodgers could then select two of Lucas, Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard in the central midfield spots.
Such is the versatility of Henderson and Gerrard though, Rodgers will normally find a way of getting them both into the side, with Henderson capable of playing at right wing-back, and Gerrard happy to move into the top three. This is unlikely to be at the expense of Lucas, though. The anchorman has provided defensive stability and consistency to the deepest midfield role, and our record with him in the side is much better than without.
At the back, Dejan Lovren has a job on his hands to earn a spot in the team, while Simon Mignolet should retain his place providing we don’t sign a January replacement…
So, Reds – is this our best XI once Sturridge returns…?
