Reports in the Daily Mail confirm that the Reds have scouted the Croatian on a number of occasions this season, with several media outlets claiming that Brendan Rodgers’ side were close to a move.

Arsenal and Everton have also shown an interest in the player, who has scored eight goals in 34 appearances so far this season, but is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury.

Liverpool are chasing a long-term replacement for captain Steven Gerrard, who will leave the club for MLS giants LA Galaxy when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Reds considered the versatile Kovacic, who can play across the midfield, out wide and even in a more defensive role, as the ideal candidate, but now look to be set for disappointment.

Vusan, who was quoted by the Mail, said: “It is not going to happen. Mateo extended his contract with Inter in January. Could it be that clubs are negotiating? No, that is not possible without Mateo and me knowing about it.

“Also, I have a player at Liverpool, Dejan Lovren so I would know about it. Both the English and Italian media speculate and find new clubs that want Kovacic every week. He’ll stay at Inter.”
