Heading into the final ten minutes, it appeared that the former England skipper would get his chance to be the hero as we were awarded a penalty. However, Robert Green made an impressive save to keep the scores level after Leroy Fer had cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s stunning opener.
However, Gerrard was not to be denied, as he atoned for the miss three minutes from time by getting his head to a corner and making the Kop rock perhaps for the final time.
Whilst this goal may have a little less significance than some of previous strikes that have defined his career, the reception he received when he was substituted moments after, allowed for the fans to express their gratitude for what he has done on so many occasions.

I’ll never see any other captain of our club in the same way I see Steven Gerrard and of that I’m 100% sure. My absolute hero.
