Even Andriy Shevchenko, a man who experienced unbridled heartbreak at the hands of Gerrard and co in Istanbul back in 2005, was among those to post a complimentary message on social media.

The Ukrainian striker was famously part of the AC Milan side that threw away a three goal lead in the Champions League final, seeing his decisive penalty saved by Jerzy Dudek just minutes after the Pole had pulled off an incredible double save against him at the end of extra time. Gerrard lifted the trophy, while Shevchenko was left to mourn what might have been.

It wasn’t the only time Gerrard got the better of him either. The No. 8 came on as a substitute in the 2006 Community Shield final, Shevchenko’s first game since joining Chelsea, inspiring Liverpool to a 2-1 victory, with Peter Crouch scoring the late winner.
