Liverpool linked with Brazilian midfielder after ‘missing out’ on Mateo Kovacic

The Telegraph have come up with this rather intriguing concept this morning regarding our list of potential midfield targets – all of whom seem to be in some way involved with Inter Milan.

According to their report, Brendan Rodgers has given up on his long talked-about but thoroughly unconfirmed pursuit of Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic, after refusing to meet the Croatian’s lofty £25m asking price.

Monaco star Geoffrey Kondogbia was reportedly our second choice, up until the point that he chose to join Inter. As a result, The Telegraph think that we’re now going to take a look at yet another Milan player – Hernanes – whose place in the team could be under threat following the arrival of the 22-year-old Frenchman.

Did you follow that? Good.

A move for Hernanes, a 30-year-old Brazil international, would certainly come as a surprise. We’ve already signed James Milner for our new-look midfield this summer and it seemed likely that, if we were to add a second new player, that it would be a comparative youngster with the potential to be the long-term successor to Steven Gerrard.

However, our new target does have a fairly impressive CV. According to The Telegraph, he was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished midfielders in Europe when he joined Inter last January from Lazio, where fans protested against his departure.

The source believes that Inter would demand a profit on the £14m they paid for their rivals for the player, but that they would be willing to sell him for less than Kovacic… we would think so as well, considering he’s almost ten years older!

Regardless of how much you read into this, it looks as if the Liverpool-Inter battle is going to run and run this summer. It certainly seems that we’re planning on making at least one more addition to our midfield, so let us know who you’d like to see lining up alongside Henderson, Milner and co next season in the comment section below!
