Simon Mignolet admits Philippe Coutinho schools him every day in training

Simon Mignolet has said that he was not surprised by Philippe Coutinho’s superb midweek goal because he is the victim of the same sort of magic every day in training.

Coutinho scored a glorious individual goal in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, which secured us a 3-1 aggregate victory in the all-English Europa League tie.

The Brazilian playmaker absolutely schooled United full-back Guillermo Varela on the edge of the box before cleverly catching out David de Gea with an outstanding dink.

“From where I was it was difficult to see how tight the angle was,” Mignolet is quoted by The Mirror as saying. “But I’ve seen it back and it was a very special goal. He got past the defender and the finish from that angle was just incredible. Philippe made it look so easy.

“I wasn’t surprised because I see him do that every day in training. He scores goals like that past me. I know what he’s capable of. He’s such a good player for us and he helped us get the job done against United. Phil scored at exactly the right time – just before half-time. It changed the game.”

It will not come as a shock to learn that Coutinho is just as magical on the training pitch, but the honest Mignolet might want to keep it a secret to save face in future!

The Belgian goalkeeper’s confession that “he scores goals like that past me” was only meant to highlight Coutinho’s talent, but it inadvertently made him sound a bit foolish!
