We’re afraid there is some bad news breaking this evening – Mamadou Sakho has been ruled out of the start of the season with an Achilles injury.

It’s a hammer blow to both the Frenchman and Klopp. Sakho had just been cleared to resume his career after a torturous three-month drugs inquiry, while Klopp has frequently spoken about the importance of having his whole team together for their first pre-season under his stewardship.

According to the Echo, our medical staff have told him he needs to rest for at least a month to ensure he completely gets over the problem that dogged him in the second half of last season.

It means we are almost certain to pair Dejan Lovren with new boy Joel Matip for our league opener against Arsenal on Sunday 14th August.

With Kolo Toure having left the club and with Martin Skrtel on the verge of joining Fenerbahce, we’ll need to wrap our two remaining senior centre-backs in cotton wool for the rest of the pre-season.

On the bright side, at least it’s not a hamstring injury…!
