Second new shirt number of the day: Alex Manninger takes traditional goalkeeper choice

For what seems like an eternity, we’ve not had “traditional” goalkeeper set up with regard to squad numbers.

Jerzy Dudek wore number one, but since new first choice Pepe Reina arrived in 2005 we’ve not had a number one keeper wearing the number one shirt. Reina wore 25, and his replacement Mignolet wears 22.

That’s changed this summer with the recruitment of Loris Karius; the German stopper has grabbed the number one shirt vacated by Brad Jones.

Now we’ve taken another step in the right direction with the news that fellow new boy Alex Manninger will wear number 13 (via official site) – a number frequently used for sub goalies.

Amazingly, we’ve not had a goalkeeper who’s worn number 13 since Tony Warner who left the club way back in 1999 (via LFCHistory.net).

Since then, the likes of Karl-Heinz Riedle, Danny Murphy, and Anthony Le Tallec have all worn the theoretically unlucky number.

Good to see the 39-year-old Austrian is a traditionalist!
