Why Daniel Sturridge missed Liverpool training yesterday

There was once a point as a Liverpool fan when hearing news that Daniel Sturridge had missed training was genuinely devastating, as it usually meant the Englishman would miss the next month – but the truth is we no longer rely on his goals.

Jurgen Klopp prefers Roberto Firmino as his centre-forward due to the Brazilian’s work-rate, pressing and movement. While Sturridge is a better finisher and more natural goalscorer, he’s a worse fit for our manager’s style.

He hasn’t started since our miserable Anfield defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup and unless there are injuries to Firmino, Coutinho or Sadio Mane, he’s unlikely to again before the end of the campaign, actually, where he may decide to move on.

Yesterday, Sturridge sat out training in La Manga, the Spanish resort where Jurgen Klopp has taken his squad for the week, but not because of another niggling injury.

The striker actually had a virus, reported the Echo, meaning he stayed at the hotel, isolated from the group so as to not pass it on to his team-mates!
