The gradual acceptance of Simon Mignolet being Liverpool’s number one next season recognises the extent of his recent rise to form.
He has been superb over the last couple of weeks, coming up with decisive saves and showcasing serious improvement on areas to his game that have previously drawn criticism. The Belgian looks a more commanding and aggressive presence in his penalty area, he is dealing with crosses better than ever before and once again he is displaying the shot-stopping expertise that attracted Liverpool to him back in 2013.
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Jurgen Klopp should continue to put his faith in the Reds shot-stopper next season. In his column for the Liverpool Echo, he said: “The save Simon Mignolet made late on was brilliant.”
“He did the right things in the box too. One or two he might have caught but he took no chances, he got his hands on it and got them away. I think he’s probably been our best player in the last two weeks.”
“I’ve always been a fan of his. He has made mistakes but his shot-stopping is brilliant. His kicking is better now and his box work is better and he must be working on it all the time with John Achterberg.”
“He might lack a little bit of belief in his own ability but he knows he has to get better and of late you can’t fault him. He’s done enough to start next season as Liverpool’s goalkeeper.”

It seems likely that Klopp will share this opinion and remain true to his word earlier on in the season by overlooking the opportunity to sign a new goalkeeper. Mignolet’s performances of late have been proof that he is capable of dealing with the Premier League’s physicality.
Five more strong performances that help drive Liverpool to a top four spot could well make Mignolet a certainty to retain his starting place next year.
