Well, you can’t fault Kayla Bibby’s ambition!
The Merseyside-based designer has released plans for an expanded Anfield, which would see the capacity of our beloved stadium increase from it’s current 54,000 to double that at 108,000….
(It’s not April Fool’s Day.)
She posted them onto SkyScraperCity and they’ve naturally got people talking…
On her plans, she told the ECHO:
“The Kop is ripe for expansion right now. In a couple of years it’s going to be too late and there will be new houses built on all that derelict land and we will have missed the boat to divert the road.
“We need foresight; think about what’s required and future-proof the area for that eventuality.
“This would be a major amendment to an existing scheme and Your Housing Group and the landscape architects would need to make the necessary changes to their masterplans (for the new high street). But these changes would save serious money down the line, because the necessary infrastructure would already be in place to facilitate LFC’s future expansion needs.”
While the grandiose plans have us dreaming, there’s more chance of us signing Pele and deploying him in a Brazilian trio with Coutinho and Bobby Firmino than this coming into fruition.
It took us what felt like decades to expand the Main Stand by 10,000 and there’s no plans at all from the owners to expand the Kop.
Plus, a stadium that seats 108,000 would be vile. Half the ground wouldn’t be able to see what was happening and there’d be a vacuous atmosphere.
On the other hand, it might increase the number of cheap seats available!
