West Ham defender randomly promises massive performance v Liverpool despite having nothing to play for

Why do mid-table and smaller sides decide to give everything against Liverpool but sometimes throw the towel in against our rivals?

Probably because we’ve proven on so many occasions this term that lesser teams can get a result against us if they play defensively and use set-pieces…

Crystal Palace came to Anfield and put in their best performance of the season, before succumbing 5-0 to Manchester City, while Burnley were rolled over by Chelsea and Spurs after holding us in April.

West Ham should theoretically already be on the beach, but they’ve had somewhat of a late-season wind and beat Tottenham at the weekend!

Now, ahead of our crucial clash at the London Stadium on Sunday, centre-back Jose Fonte has promised a huge effort to derail our top four challenge.

“We are pleased but we still have two games to go and two wins to get,” Fonte told Reuters.

“We have a massive game against Liverpool and we want to finish in the top 10 so we have got to win those two games. It’s another big game on Sunday and we want to replicate what we did against Tottenham.

“We have found a good system and we’ve been excellent so I’m pleased because as a defender it’s good to keep clean sheets,” he added.

“The three points are always more important but the clean sheet matters to me. When we play like this as a team and work hard, it’s very difficult to beat us.”

Away from home recently we’ve beaten Stoke, West Brom and Watford, so we’re actually pleased the game’s on the road and not at Anfield which has often been a nervy environment this term.

If we manage to beat the Irons, the Champions League will be within our grasp. Hopefully Roberto Firmino, Coutinho and co. can find the creative genius to outdo Fonte and West Ham’s feisty defenders.
