Liverpool seem to have won the race for Virgil van Dijk, Southampton’s top notch centre-back, who’ll become our record signing, reports the Echo.
The Dutchman was wanted by Manchester City and Chelsea, but the lure of Jurgen Klopp and the chance to join Liverpool’s project has convinced the 25-year-old to commit to an Anfield switch. He’s rejected their advances and agreed to join Liverpool – but the club still have to decide on a fee with Southampton.

This should be a formality though, and the expected price for Van Dijk will smash our transfer record, with the £35m Mo Salah signing also expected imminently. All bookmakers have stopped taking odds on Van Dijk’s future.

Last season, Liverpool’s defence was leaky at the best of times, and despite Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren keeping five clean-sheets in our final six games, Klopp has decided to spend big on strengthening the backline.
With this deal, Van Dijk will likely become the most expensive defender in the history of football.
Liverpool FC have announced a press-conference for Friday morning, which many believe will be to introduce Van Dijk and Salah to the media.
Klopp’s done the hard-work, but the club is flush for cash and will be happy to pay the defender what he wants, and Southampton what they desire for the powerhouse.
What a start to the summer!
