Klopp uses ‘Ugly Brother’ analogy to explain Napoli win

Jurgen Klopp loves a soundbite, especially when he’s fraught with emotion following an epic Liverpool win…

And last night was no different, as he revelled in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Napoli, which sees us progress to the Champions League Last 16, to be played in February next year.

Earlier in the competition, Liverpool were atrocious away at Napoli and lost by the same scoreline, but the performance we produced at Anfield was completely opposite to it and full or risks, excitement and energy.

Klopp reckons this surprised Napoli, who only saw Liverpool’s ‘Ugly Brothers’ during the reverse tie!

“I’m not sure if a manager has ever been more proud of a team than I am at the moment,” Klopp told BT Sport, cited in Goal.

“I said to the boys before the game the only good thing from the first game against Napoli [a 1-0 reverse] that they would have no clue who we are, because it was our ugly brothers, it was not us.

“In the Champions League you usually cannot surprise a team, I don’t know if they were surprised, but we had the opportunity to show more than we did at Napoli, and together with the crowd, it was just outstanding.

“The boys played an outstanding game. You could watch all the Napoli games and you would not find a team that caused them the problems that we did tonight. How we pressed them, they had to change their game completely, they had no real key for us in the build up.”

There’s a number of brilliant teams we can draw in the knockout stages such as Dortmund, Barca, Porto, Bayern, Real Madrid or Juventus.

In a two-legged affair though, we’d back Liverpool against any of those aforementioned names.

In fact, Klopp has never lost a two-legged European tie for Liverpool. And he joined over three years ago.
