Lovren: Why we’re in the best shape we’ve been in for years this season

Dejan Lovren says Liverpool have the experience and the squad to compete at the very top of the Premier League this season, picking out the strength in depth the Reds now have as being crucial.

Summer signings like Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have bolstered the Reds’ squad and competition for places has improved performances, in addition to there being higher quality levels of cover for rotation and injuries.

Lovren himself is a good example of the squad depth, having come into the side to replace Joe Gomez, who should return from injury in around mid-January.

Lovren said, via the Evening Standard: “There are quite a lot of players still here and it was like a puzzle, you just keep bringing these players you missed and now I think it’s a perfect match.

“You feel that in the squad, it’s how it should be. There has always been something missing all these years but I think now we have everything.

Lovren also insisted the squad are not putting too much pressure on themselves in the title race, in which the Reds are six points clear of Tottenham ahead of the final game of 2018 against Arsenal.

He added: “There’s no pressure, to be honest. In the previous years, yes, but now when you look in the dressing room, when you go into Melwood in the morning, everybody is happy.”

The Reds have put themselves in the perfect place ahead of the second half of the season, but there is a long way to go. The entirety of the squad will be needed, as well as a bit of luck with keeping key men fit.

Time will tell whether the Reds’ squad is the ‘perfect match’ as Lovren described, but it is certainly looking good on the evidence of 2018-19 so far.
