Fabinho proved a thorn in Bayern Munich’s attacking efforts as he flourished at centre-back in Liverpool’s goalless draw on Tuesday night.
The Brazilian shone in the absence of the suspended Virgil van Dijk and injured Dejan Lovren, affording the Bundesliga champions little room to manoeuvre in the final third.
This included limiting Robert Lewandowski to a frustrating evening up top with a stern and mature display alongside Joel Matip.
His performance would have been rewarded had it not been for an unusual lack of conviction in front of goal from the Reds’ front three.
Whilst Jurgen Klopp’s frontmen struggled to supply the finishing touch, Fabinho remained at hand to ensure they were not punished at the other end.
In doing so, he prevented what looked a near-certain goal with a perfectly-timed tackle on Lewandowski just as he was about to pull the trigger in the six-yard box.
