Klopp explains Xherdan Shaqiri’s situation ahead of Man Utd clash

Xherdan Shaqiri is in contention to play again as Liverpool continue their preparations for Sunday’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Swiss international was ruled out of the 3-0 win over Bournemouth last time out in the Premier League due to a minor abdominal strain.

He proceeded to undergo rehabilitation during the club’s training camp in Marbella, before being an unused substitute in Tuesday’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Bayern Munich.

Having continued his recovery since then, the summer signing now looks ready to play a more significant role if needed at the weekend.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “We thought if we needed [Shaqiri] for 10 or 15 minutes [against Bayern] we could bring him at least. Now he is another five or six days in training, which always helps.”

Shaqiri has endured a difficult individual start to the new year, struggling to match the impact he had been having as a second half substitute across the first half of the season.

Nonetheless, his return gives Klopp welcomed attacking depth to make use of from the sidelines if necessary in such a high profile contest.

It was in December’s meeting with Manchester United that Shaqiri made his most meaningful statement as a Red yet, coming off the bench to score two late goals and seal a 3-1 win at Anfield. Let’s hope for a similar scenario on this occasion.
